  1. Handling Our American Flag

    May 1, 2024

Atwood Primary School’s evening custodian, Bob Smith, works with second graders to teach them how to handle our American flag. Each day, children take turns taking down our flag and learning how to respectfully handle and fold this symbol of our country. The children anxiously await their turn to assist Mr. Smith with this important duty. It’s wonderful to have Mr. Smith turn this daily duty into a memorable learning experience for the children. #WeAreRSU18 #AtwoodAwesome

  2. Reflecting on Honesty

    April 29, 2024

At Atwood Primary School, Mrs. Weatherbie’s student teacher, Madison Bradbury, taught the children an important Social-Emotional word – honesty. She featured a wonderful book called The Empty Pot about a village of boys who were given the task of growing a flower in a pot – with the promise that the one who grew the biggest, best flower would become the new Emperor. The boys discovered that their flowers would not grow, so all but one child replaced their unsuccessful seed with a fully grown flower. The one boy who was honest and admitted that his seed wouldn’t grow (hence, the empty pot) was rewarded for his honesty with the throne. The children paused throughout the story to discuss honesty, and afterward they were given personalized paper pots to decorate. The empty pots symbolized the boy’s honesty. The students’ work was later displayed on the door for Atwood’s Read-A-Thon month! #WeAreRSU18 #AtwoodAwesome

  3. Atwood’s Reading Celebrations

    April 22, 2024

To celebrate reading, Atwood Primary held a door decorating week as well as a “Read My Shirt” day! Such creative ways to celebrate reading with their young learners! #WeAreRSU18 #AtwoodAwesome

  4. Atwood Archery

    April 8, 2024

Atwood’s kindergarten through second grade PE classes recently had a visit from Patrick Kearns from the YMCA who is the director of Camp Tracy and New England Sport Camps. These Atwood Primary students had the chance to learn and practice the sport of archery for the first time. Patrick also facilitated a scavenger hunt for each class that promoted teamwork. Many of the classes were able to play a few parachute games! Thank you so much, Patrick, for working with the Atwood Awesome Superheroes! #WeAreRSU18 #AtwoodAwesome

  5. Honeybee Program

    April 1, 2024

March was an exciting month in the Atwood library. Every school year, RSU 18’s elementary librarians with students in K-2 gather and put together a list of books that everyone reads to all young district students. This is called the Honeybee Program. The books are always a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction. Once all of the books have been read, the students get to vote for their favorite choice. After all of the votes are tallied, ten copies of the winning book are purchased and raffled off on the last day of school! #WeAreRSU18 #AtwoodAwesome

  6. How To Make Slime

    March 25, 2024
Did somebody say slime? The Atwood kindergarteners in Mrs. Hatch’s class enjoyed a fun (and messy) kick-off to their how-to writing unit by making slime from scratch! They gathered the necessary ingredients and went through the steps in sequential order. Each student made their own slime creation to take home. Pictures were taken and then used to create a mentor text to teach from and refer back to while these emerging writers took on this new style of writing. This is purposeful play at its best! #WeAreRSU18 #AtwoodAwesome

  7. Egg-cellent Force and Motion Studies

    March 18, 2024

Ms. Bickford’s second graders at Atwood Primary School have had fun exploring the concepts of force, motion, push, pull, friction, and gravity through a variety of close reads and experiments. They’ve built marshmallow catapults, used different ramps and materials to test friction, and worked in pairs to construct their own egg-drop contraptions to test their hypothesis on gravity. The children were really proud of themselves because all of their eggs survived the fall! #WeArersu18 #AtwoodAwesome

  8. Sharing Nonfiction Writing Piece

    March 11, 2024

Mrs. Couture’s second grade student, Eli, read his nonfiction writing piece about wolves to Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Gartley! Eli shared, “I felt a little bit nervous but mostly honored to read to Mr. Gartley.” Mr. Gartley enjoyed Eli’s sophisticated word choice and fun facts! After Eli left central office, he said, “This was the best afternoon ever!” Eli’s work was definitely Atwood awesome! #WeAreRSU18 #AtwoodAwesome
